Molecular Landscape for a Journal Cover

The Process

Sketch B&W.jpg

Sketches

The client was provided with sketches to illustrate the basic design of the cover, taking into consideration the placement of the text for the journal cover.

LDL receptor.jpg

Visualization of LDL-R structure

The structure of the LDL-Receptor protein and viral surface glycoprotein were accurately visualized utilizing structural data from crystallized protein domains. Model of LDL-R shown on right.

mutant M protein.jpg

Visualization of protein M mutant

The featured protein was represented by a predicted model for the M51R mutant matrix (M) protein. The critical methionine to arginine substitution at residue 51 was highlighted.

Size comparison.jpg

Molecular size comparison

To maintain accuracy, the atomic sizes of molecules were determined and proteins were scaled accordingly.

Color palette selection

The client received several options for the final color palette. The options were inspired by the ideas of hero versus villain, and space travel.

Journal cover

The image features realistic three-dimensional representations of the M51R mutant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus and a colon carcinoma cell. The accurate visualization of protein molecular structures was achieved through the use of data obtained from X-ray crystallography, supplemented by comparative homology and ab initio protein structure prediction methods. The strategic use of light and color produce a sense of hope for the potential therapeutic impact of M51R mutant VSV for colon carcinoma treatment.
